How to Sew a Draft Excluder for Winter

Door with wreath and draft excluder

As the days get colder we all face the same dilemma: for how long can we avoid turning the heating on? And we all know how much a draft from underneath the door adds to the chill. So, it makes sense to make a draft excluder for the coming winter.

You can use any fabric for this project, however, I particularly like to use a heavy weight fabric. In this case, one that I am unlikely to use in another pattern. If you have a long strip of strange fabric that you never remember buying and do not know what to do with, use it now!

For filling the draft excluder, you will need some rice to add to the weight. You do not need much as you will mix it with stuffing. As well as the stuffing, I like to add scrap fabric. I know this sounds crazy, but sometimes you do not have enough stuffing and lots of useless scraps, so just cut up the scraps and use them as well!

What You Will Need:

  • Fabric: 34.5" x 13"

  • Stuffing (see tip here)

  • Rice (see tip here)

  • General sewing equipment
