A Book Sleeve: Free Sewing Pattern

Books with pens, ink, fabric and lace

Everybody enjoys a good book. And most of the time you cannot bear to put it down. But, the problem that every bookworm finds, is that you do not want to damage your book! So this book sleeve is the perfect thing (they also make great presents for your bookish friend).

I have already made a pattern for a book cover - which is just like a bag - but I prefer a book sleeve as it is constantly on the book so that you do not forget to put the book back in it after reading.

For extra help there is a video at the end of the page!

Measuring Your Book:

Main fabric: For the width, measure your book across the front, spine and back. For the length, measure the height of your book.

Inside flap fabric: This will be the length of your book x 3" (this measurement is adjustable, but 3" is a general size).

Pocket fabric: This is the width of the front of your book x 4" (once again this measurement can be adjusted).

If you you are making this as a present, or do not have a particular book you would like to make it for, the standard book sizes are as follows:

-Hardcover books: 6"x 9"

-Paperbacks: 5" x 8"/6" x 9"

If you are using these measurements, than you will have to double the width and add 1" (e.g.: 6" x 9" will become 13" x 9")

To all the measurements you take, you will need to add on 1/2" for seam allowance.
