Books are one of life's greatest pleasures, but there is always the worry of damaging the precious pages. So, why not sew your own book cover to keep your book out of harm's way? This sewing tutorial is a really simple, straight forward project which is perfect for a beginner.
You will need an extra type of fabric for this project, but this can be replaced by so many other things that you do not need to use the same as me. To protect the book you will need a thicker fabric in the middle - wadding, heavy interfacing or craft felt are three brilliant choices.
What You Will Need:
4 pieces of fabric 8.5" by 10.5" (I like to have 2 in one fabric and the other 2 in another)
2 pieces of batting/interfacing/craft felt 8.5" by 10.5" (inner)
General sewing equipment
Something to poke corners out with e.g. knitting needles
Iron
Method:
Take an inner fabric piece and place an outside fabric piece the wrong side on top of it. Place the contrasting fabric right sides together on the other fabrics.
Sew along one of the shortest ends.
Open the top fabric up and iron flat.
Repeat with the remaining fabrics.
Place both sides of fabric right sides together. Pin with the seams matching.
Sew around the edge, leaving approximately a 3" gap on the shortest side not connected to the inner fabric.
Turn right sides out.
Iron hole flat and oversew closed.
Tuck the side you just oversewed into the other.
Iron flat and oversew around the top of the book cover to keep it in place.
Now place your book inside and you have completed your project!
