I love granny squares. They are so simple to make and they are just so handy to have. Once you have learnt how to crochet a granny square, you can then learn to create so many more beautiful squares...just like this one!
This square is relatively simple, once you understand which stitches are being used (don't worry, I explain them all in detail below!) and you can use any yarn you like in whatever colours you want. As you will see, I've used brown, yellows, and white as I think they all work so well together.
If you would like to learn how to crochet a traditional granny square, you can find my free tutorial here.
Materials:
A yarn of your choice in 4 colours (I am using a DK yarn in brown, light yellow, dark yellow, and white).
4.5mm crochet hook
Scissors
Darning needle
Stitch Abbreviations:
tr: treble crochet
dtr: double treble crochet
sl st: slip stitch
Pattern Notes:
This pattern is worked in UK terms (you can find my US vs Uk crochet terms chart here).
The chain 3 and chain 2 at the beginning of each round do count as a stitch.
Method:
Before we start, I'm going to explain two stitches that are used: a small puff stitch, and a large puff stitch.
Small Puff Stitch:
Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop (you will have 3 loops on your hook).
Yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch, yarn over, and pull up another loop (you'll have 5 loops on your hook).
Yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch, yarn over, and pull up a final loop (you'll have 7 loops on your hook).
Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops.
Chain 1 to close the stitch.
Large Puff Stitch:
Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch. Yarn over, and pull up a loop (you'll have 3 loops on your hook).
Yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch, yarn over, and pull up another loop (you'll have 5 loops on your hook).
Repeat the last step 3 more times, until you have 11 loops on your hook.
Yarn over and pull through all 11 loops on your hook.
Chain 2 to close the stitch.
Round 1:
Create a magic ring.
Chain 3.
Make 15 tr into the ring.
Slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain 3 to close the round. (16 tr in total)
Round 2:
Join your light yellow yarn and chain 3.
Starting in the same space, make a small puff stitch.
Continue to make a small puff stitch in each stitch around. You will have 16 small puffs in total.
At the end of your round (you will have finished with a chain 1), slip stitch into the top chain of your beginning chain 3.
Round 3:
Join your dark yellow yarn and chain 3.
For this round, we will be working into the space between each small puff from the previous row.
Starting in the space between the first two puff stitches, make a large puff stitch.
Continue to make a large puff stitch in each space around. You will have 16 large puffs in total.
At the end of the round (you will have finished with a chain 2), slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain 3.
Round 4:
Join your white yarn and chain 3.
In the same space, make 2 tr.
Into the next space, make: 3 dtr, chain 2, 3 dtr. (This creates the corner of the square)
In the next 3 spaces, make 3 tr.
Repeat the last two steps to create the rest of the square.
At the end, slip stitch into the top chain from the beginning chain 3.
Round 5:
Chain 3.
In the space between the treble clusters from the previous row, make 3 tr.
In the corner space, make: 3 tr, chain 3, 3 tr.
Continue to make 3 tr in each space, and 3 tr, chain 3, 3 tr in each corner.
In the last space, make 2 tr. Sl st into the top of the beginning chain 3 to close the round.
Fasten off, cut your yarn, and sew in any ends.
And there you are! It really is that simple to create a sunburst granny square.
