I was scrolling through Instagram the other day (as you do), when I came across a reel showing these very aesthetically pleasing and cute circular trinket dishes. I scrolled past and very quickly forgot about them...

Until later that evening, when I sat down with my regular cuppa, crochet hook and wool, and I realised that I had no idea what to make for this month's blog post. Then, I remembered those little trinket dishes...Well, you get the idea. However, I didn't like how simple they were. So, naturally, I thought of a different shape: a star!

Now, I really do think these are adorable. They're practical, relatively quick to make, and you can use up the small ball of wool that you have lying around that hasn't been good for any other project. I quite like to mix a couple of balls of yarn (as you can see in the photos below) because it adds a unique touch!

(Quite frankly, the brown and white mixed one looked a lot like a biscuit while I was making it!)

I've made them in one size. However, you can make them smaller or larger by increasing or lowering your hook and wool size. You can also use any wool that you like. I find that a slightly chunkier or cotton wool works nicely as it's quite firm and holds its shape. Just make sure you use the recommended hook size for the wool you use, as a hook that is too big may result in loose stitches and your dish won't hold its shape!

So, let's get started!

Materials:

  • A yarn of your choice - slightly chunkier or cotton yarn works brilliantly.

  • Corresponding crochet hook - I'm using a 4.5mm hook.

  • Scissors

  • Darning needle

Abbreviations: (Pattern written in UK crochet terms)

  • dc: double crochet (US single)

  • htr: half treble crochet (US half double)

  • tr: treble crochet (US double)

  • dtr: double treble crochet (US treble)

  • sl st: slip stitch

Pattern Notes:

  • The chain 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.

  • We will work in circular rounds that join at the end with a slip stitch and a chain 1. Do not turn your work at any point.

  • Typically, a half-treble crochet requires a turning chain of 2, which counts as the first stitch. However, we will only chain 1, as I find this lays better.

Special Stitches: Double Treble Crochet (US treble)

  • Yarn over your hook twice and insert it into your stitch.

  • Yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook (3 loops on your hook).

  • Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on your hook).

  • Yarn over and pull through your last 2 loops

Method:

Round 1:

  • Begin by creating a magic ring. If you are unsure how to do this, check out my blog post here where I explain how to do this in detail.

  • Into this ring, make 6dc.

  • Sl st into the first dc to close the round. (6dc in total)

Round 2:

  • Chain 1 (remember, this does not count as a stitch.)

  • Make 2dc (aka, a dc increase) in each stitch.

  • Sl st into the first dc to close the round. (12dc in total)
