I don't know about you, but I always have a hot drink by me. I love having a constant flow of drinks that sit just at my elbow, within easy reach, whilst I'm working! Or, even better, if I'm snuggled on the sofa, crocheting or designing a pattern, I just have to have a drink...and maybe a snack!
However (and that's a big however!), having a comfort drink does come at a price...and that is in the form of drink stains! There's nothing more unappealing than a sticky circle of cold coffee on that lovely wooden table you just finished cleaning! But there is a fix for this problem, and that's to have a never-ending supply of coasters. Now that's where I come in. If you know how to crochet, it just makes sense to make some coasters yourself. That way, you can just whip them up whenever you need them!
These crochet lace coasters are a great project for beginners as they'll teach you how to crochet in the round, and also will help you get used to creating a lacey texture (which is much easier than you might think!). These coasters are a great scrap yarn project, and they're also perfect to gift!
So, I hope you all like this pattern! If you are more of a visual learner, make sure you check out my video tutorial below! And now, let's get into it!

What Yarn Should I use?
I recommend a cotton yarn, if you can get it! Cotton yarn holds its shape beautifully, it's durable, and because it's a natural fibre, it's good with heat. If, however, you don't always have some cotton yarn to spare, any lightweight or DK weight yarn works beautifully. I'll often use some DK acrylic yarn as I always have some spare!
Just remember, the size yaof the rn you use might change the overall size of your coaster! So if your yarn is particularly thin or thick, you might end up with a smaller or bigger coaster!
Materials:
4mm crochet hook
a yarn of your choice (see notes above)
scissors
a darning needle
Stitch Abbreviations:
ch(s): chain(s)
dc: double crochet
sc: single crochet
sl st: slip stitch
sk: skip
st(s): stitch(es)
Pattern Notes:
This pattern is worked in US crochet terms, not UK. If you are unsure about the difference between these two terms, check out my blog post here, where I explain it in detail.
The chain 3 at the beginning of each round does count as a stitch.
This coaster is made in rounds. Do not turn at the end of each round.
Any infomation inside the brackets {} is to be repeated.

Method:
Round 1:
Make a magic ring (if you are unsure how to do this, check out my post here). OR, make a slip knot, ch 5, and sl st back into the 1st ch to create a ring.
Ch 3.
Into the ring, make 15dc.
At the end, sl st into the top of the beginning ch 3 to close the round. (16dc in total)

Round 2:
Ch 3.
In the next st, make 1dc.
{Ch 2. Make 1dc into the next 2 sts}. Repeat this around. You will finish the round with a ch 2.
At the end, sl st into the top of the beginning ch 3 to close the round. (16dc in total)
Round 3:
Sl st into the next st.
Sl st into the ch 2 space.
Ch 3. In that same space, make: 1dc, ch 2, 2dc.
{Sk 2dc. Into the next ch 2 space, make: 2dc, ch 2, 2dc}. Repeat this around.
At the end, sl st into the top of the beginning ch 3 to close the round. (32dc in total)
Round 4:
Sl st into the next st.
Sl st into the ch 2 space.
Ch 3. In the same st, make: 2dc, ch 2, 3dc.
{Sk 4dc. Into the next ch 2 space, make: 3dc, ch 2, 3dc}. Repeat this around.
At the end, sl st into the top of the beginning ch 3 to close the round. (48dc in total)
Round 5:
Ch 1. Make 1sc in the same stitch.
{Sk 3dc. In the ch 2 space, make 7dc. Sk 3dc. Make 1sc into the next gap}. Repeat this around your coaster. You will finish with 7dc.
At the end, sl st into the beginning sc to close the round.
Fasten off, cut your yarn and sew in any ends, using your darning needle.
