How I Made a Patchwork Skirt

I discovered recently that patchwork is not only used for quilts but also a fantastic way to create a new fabrication for garments! I thought this would be the perfect way to use up so many of my scraps and be a really fun and crazy project.
I did not have a plan for how to sew a patchwork skirt, so I have not got a "traditional" type of tutorial for you all. Instead, I am just going to chat about the steps and give you some inspiration on how to create your very own personalised patchwork skirt.

Choosing your fabric:
It may be quite daunting to think about choosing so many different fabrics that all have a similar style or colour to them. So I did not think about either! I just went through my scraps and picked out my favourites. Once I had collected a good amount, I laid them next to each other to see if they were visually pleasing, and after a few swaps and changes, I was happy with them! It did turn out that I had many that were similar colours, but the less you think about it, the better!
The Patchwork Plan:
I knew that the type of skirt I wanted to sew was a very simple elastic waist skirt, which is just made up of a rectangle double the length of your waist.
The rectangle I decided would be made up of rows, and the rows would be made up of several patches, and everything would be a different size!

Then I cut out all of my rectangles!
If I am going to be honest, I did not properly measure any of the rectangles. All I did was cut the pieces I wanted for one row, roughly measure them (remembering to add seam allowance), and I only measured the row properly once I had sewn the patches together. And then I could trim them or add to them as needed.
I just repeated this process for all of the rows, and then sewed all of the rows together!
I also made the waistband in the same way.
The Skirt:
Once I was happy with my patchwork, I could sew the skirt! This part got a bit more detailed, so if you would like to sew the same skirt as me...
Here is a more in-depth tutorial of all the steps:
I hope this has given you some inspiration on how to sew your own patchwork clothes, as it is such a fun sewing project!
