Crochet Lily of the Valley Flower Bookmark

Updated: Apr 3

A simple crochet flower bookmark.

This pattern for a crochet flower bookmark is relatively simple and takes very little time to make. I recommend using a thin cotton yarn. You can, of course, use a standard DK yarn but I found that this makes the bookmark a little bulky. I really like how the cotton makes the flower seem a little more delicate.

If, like me, you are a booklover, you will know that you can never have too many bookmarks. Make sure you check out my other two simple crochet bookmark patterns here:

Materials:

  • a lightweight yarn of your choice in white and green (I'm using Paintbox cotton).

  • a 2.5mm crochet hook.

  • scissors.

  • darning needle.

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • dc: double crochet

  • htr: half treble crochet

  • tr: treble crochet

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern is worked in UK terms (you can find my post explaining the difference between UK and US terms here).

  • For the flower, we will be working in rounds. Do not turn your work.

  • The chain 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.

Method:

The Flower:

Round 1:

  • Begin by making a magic ring (if you are unsure how to do this, check out my post here).

  • Chain 1.

  • Into the ring, make 7 dc.

  • Slip stitch into the first dc to close the round.

Round 2:

  • Chain 1.

  • Make 2 dc (a increase) into each stitch around (14 dc in total).

  • Slip stitch into the first dc to close the round.

Round 3-5:

  • Chain 1.

  • Make 1 dc into each stitch around (14 dc in total).

  • Slip stitch into the first dc to close the round.

Round 6:

  • Chain 1.

  • *Make 1 dc, then 1 decrease.* Repeat around until you have 2 stitches left.

  • Make 1 dc into these last two stitches. (10 dc in total)

  • Slip stitch into the first dc to close the round.

Round 7:

  • Chain 1.

  • In the same stitch, make: 1 dc, 1 htr, 1 tr.

  • In the next stitch, make: 1 tr, 1 htr, 1dc.

  • Repeat the last two steps around. You will make 5 petals in total.

  • At the end, fasten off, cut your yarn and sew in any ends.

For the Vine:

Leaf 1:

  • Chain 6.

  • Slip stitch back into the first chain.

Leaf 2:

  • Chain 18.

  • Slip stitch into the 6th chain from your hook. However, for this leaf, slip stitch onto the other side of your chain so that your leaf points the opposite way to the previous one.

Leaves 3-6:

  • Chain 18.

  • Slip stitch into the 6th chain from your hook, alternating the side of the chain you slip stitch into each time.

Creating the stem:

  • When you have completed all 6 leaves, chain 16.

  • We are now going to make a larger leaf. Starting in the 2nd chain from your hook, make: 1 slip stitch, 1dc, 1 htr, and 1 slip stitch.

  • Chain 7.

  • Fasten off and cut your yarn, leaving a long tail end (we will use this to sew with later).

Optional Step:

  • With your green yarn, chain 5.

  • Starting in the 2nd chain from your hook, make: 1 slip stitch, 1 dc, 1 htr, and 1 slip stitch.

  • Fasten off and cut your yarn, leaving a long tail end (for sewing with).

Assembling:

  • Take the long tail end of your vine and, using your darning needle, sew it to the top of your flower.

  • Then, take your other leaf and sew it onto the vine just above the flower.

  • Sew in any loose ends.
