I adore wisteria. I think it's such a magical flower; its colours are just gorgeous, and it's so dainty and whimsical. That's why, when I was trying to decide on what flower keychain to design next, my mind landed on this flower. The more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea - wisteria falls in such a beautiful way, in lovely little clumps, which would work so well, hanging on a keychain. Plus, I have a lovely little brown leather bag, which just made the lilac and green yarn I used pop!! That is why, after I designed it, I just knew I had to share it with you all on here!

This pattern is lovely and simple. To create the flowers, we actually only use chains and slip stitches! I would say the trickiest part is joining the flowers together. However, once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad! I've also fallen in love with how quick this pattern ended up being! I've made about five of these keychains, and they work up so quickly!

I really hope you all love this pattern as much as I do! If you are more of a visual learner, make sure you check out my video tutorial below! And now, let's get into it!

What Yarn Should I Use?

I recommend a lightweight or DK weight yarn, but nothing thicker! Just remember, the thinner the yarn, the daintier your keychain will be! I've also used acrylic and cotton yarn; you can really use whatever you have! In terms of colours, you'll need a shade of purple for the flowers, and green for the vine and leaves. Common wisteria colours are: lilac, dark purple, cream, pink, and blue. You can either stick to one colour or you could use a few, and create a multi-coloured keychain! The choice is yours!

What Hook Should I Use?

I recommend a 3.5mm crochet hook. However, if you are using a thinner yarn than mine, check the recommended hook size on your label.

What You'll Need:

  • a DK or lightweight yarn in purple and green (see notes above)

  • a 3.5mm crochet hook (see notes above)

  • a pair of scissors

  • a darning needle

  • a metal keychain. You can either use a metal ring keychain or one with an extra clip (like the one I use).

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • ch(s): chain(s)

  • sl st: slip stitch

  • sc: single crochet

  • hdc: half double crochet

  • dc: double crochet

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern is worked in US crochet terms, not UK. If you are unsure about the difference between these two terms, check out my blog post here, where I explain it in detail.

  • Any information inside the brackets {} is to be repeated.

  • We begin by creating 3 separate flowers. Then, we join them by creating a vine and 2 big leaves.

Crochet Wisteria Keychain:

Large Flowers: Make 2 using purple yarn.
  • Begin by making a slip knot, and ch 33.

  • Sl st in the 3rd ch from your hook.

  • {ch 3, sl st into the next ch} repeat 6 times. (Note: your chain will start and continue to twist as you work down it - this is correct! This is exactly what you want your flower to do!)

  • {ch 4, sl st into the next ch} repeat 6 times.

  • {ch 5, sl st into the next ch} repeat 6 times.

  • {ch 6, sl st into the next ch} repeat 6 times.

  • {ch 7, sl st into the next ch} repeat 6 times.

  • You should have now worked into every chain. From here, ch 1 to fasten off, cut your yarn, and sew in any tail ends using your darning needle.

  • {ch 4, sl st into the next ch} repeat 6 times.

  • {ch 5, sl st into the next ch} repeat 6 times.

  • {ch 6, sl st into the next ch} repeat 6 times.

  • From here, take 1 of your large flowers. Insert your hook into the top of the flower (in the foundation chain, not one of the large loops) and make a sl st.

  • Then, take your small flower, insert your hook into the top of it and make a sl st.

  • Now, ch 7.

  • Working back down the ch, starting in the 2nd ch, make: sl st, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc. This is the first leaf.

  • Repeat the last 2 steps to create a 2nd leaf.

  • Now, to join the leaves together, sl st into the 1st ch on the 1st leaf (the ch your made a sc into). This just closes any gaps and makes it look neater!

  • Take your last flower (it should be a large one), insert your hook into the top of it, and make a sl st.

  • Now, we're going to finish by creating a 2nd vine: ch 7. Sl st into 2nd ch from your hook.

  • Ch 3. Sl st into 2nd ch from your hook.

  • Ch 7. Sl st into 2nd ch from your hook.

  • Ch 3. Sl st into 2nd chain from your hook.

  • Ch 2, cut your yarn, and pull the tail end through.

  • From here, trim down the 2 green tail ends on either end of the vine. You can make this as long or as short as you want.
