If - like me - you detest drink stains on furniture, then you know that you can never have too many coasters. So, why not use your skills to fix this problem and make some beautiful crochet coasters? They are unbelievably simple to make and are the perfect project for a beginner crocheter!
What Yarn Should I use?
I recommend a cotton yarn, if you can get it! Cotton yarn holds its shape beautifully, it's durable, and it's good with heat. If, however, you don't always have some cotton yarn to spare, any lightweight or DK yarn works beautifully. I'll often use some DK acrylic yarn as I always have some spare!
Just remember, the size yarn you use might change the overall size of your coaster! So if your yarn is particularly thin or thick, you might end up with a smaller or bigger coaster!
Materials:
4mm crochet hook
a yarn of your choice
scissors
a darning needle
Stitch Abbreviations:
sc: single crochet
dc: double crochet
sl st: slip stitch
Pattern Notes:
This pattern is worked in US crochet terms, not UK. If you are unsure about the difference between these two terms, check out my blog post here where I explain it in detail.
The chain 3 at the beginning of each round does count as a stitch.
This coaster is made in rounds. Do not turn at the end of each round.

Method:
Round 1:
Make a magic ring (if you are unsure how to do this, check out my post here).
Chain 3.
Into the ring, make 15dc.
At the end, sl st into the top of the beginning chain 3 to close the round. (16dc in total)

Round 2:
Chain 3.
In the next stitch, make 1dc.
Chain 2.
In the next 2 stitches, make 1dc.
Repeat the last two steps around (you will finish the round with a chain 2).
At the end, sl st into the top of the beginning chain 3 to close the round. (16dc in total)
Round 3:
Sl st across into the first chain 2 space.
Chain 3. In that same space, make: 1dc, chain 2, 2dc.
Working around in each chain 2 space, make: 2dc, chain 2, 2dc.
At the end, sl st into the top of the beginning chain 3 to close the round. (32dc in total)
Round 4:
Sl st across into the first chain 2 space.
Chain 3. In the same stitch, make: 2dc, chain 2, 3dc.
Working into the next chain 2 space, make: 3dc, chain 2, 3dc.
At the end, sl st into the top of the beginning chain 3 to close the round. (48dc in total)
Round 5:
Chain 1. Make 1sc in the same stitch.
Skip over the next 3dc. In the chain 2 space, make 7dc.
Skip over the next 3dc and make 1sc in the next gap.
Repeat the last two steps around. (You will finish the round with 7dc.)
At the end, sl st into the beginning sc to close the round.
Fasten off, cut your yarn and sew in any ends.
